Off-roading Basics Part 1

Overview

Many of our Land Rover's and Range Rover's are typically used for urban driving however the Land Rover lineup consists of some of finest, most capable and luxurious off-roaders available. Whether you are in the Toronto area, northern Ontario or in rain-forests, deserts, and other places no ordinary vehicle could reach, you will find Land Rovers. The second you leave the paved road of the city is the moment you realize the incredible potential of your Land Rover. Here is a quick overview on how to maximize your Land Rover's off road prowess.

Get to Know Your Land Rover:

Before venturing off road it is a good idea to have a mental picture of your vehicle's dimensions; squeezing into tight places, climbing grades and of course venturing over objects require a good knowledge of your vehicles size and shape, particularly the underside of your vehicle.

Make sure you are aware of critical under-body components, such as, gearboxes, fuel tank, etc... These are definitely items you do not want to bump or hit while traveling over obstacles.

Before venturing forward if you have a roof rack or box; don't forget to check your height clearance.
Read the owner's manual and discover the purpose of all the on-board technology and features.

Tips for Off-road Driving:

Provided it is safe to do, give your desired area a walk though and survey your area, remember off-roading isn't about a dash to the finish line, take you time and enjoy the adventure, the outdoors and the nature that surrounds you.

Before you decide to climb that steep hill, make sure you are aware of what is on the other side.

If you are thinking of making a pass through water obstacles, check the depth with a pole or even a branch, its much better than finding out that hard way that the water was 6ft deep!

When driving never wrap your thumbs around the wheel or place your entire hand through the wheel. An unseen rock or log may not upset your Land Rover but if you have your hands in the wrong place a quick jar to the wheel can twist the wheel quickly, with your thumbs or hands with it.
